Fil Am Tennis celebrates Heritage Month
Fil Am Tennis community celebrated “Filipino American Heritage Month” at Skyline Sports and Health last Saturday night, October 8 2005 w/ guest Philippine Cultural Embassy staff Roger Gonzales and participation by George Duangmanee’s family and  members  from Thai Tennis Orgn of America, Sri Lankan Tennis and a member from Washington Chinese Tennis Association. Mr. Gonzales brought over free materials for distribution and had a video showing on the many beautiful sights and sounds, as well as Philippine Folk Dances from the Philippines. Ms. De Leva from Potomac, Maryland commented after watching the video made her home sick for the Philippines.

The festive evening drew about forty people coming from Gaithersburg, Maryland and as far as Manassas, Centreville, and Ashburn in Virginia. Food was bountiful with the traditional pansit bihon and lumpia shanghai on the menu but other members brought Pad Thai, spaghetti, Singaporean curry noodles, Cajun fried chicken, and ensaymada. Each participant brought with them some “baon” for home, which often is a customary hospitality trait of Filipinos.

The evening began with some tennis instructions for the kids by Filipino Tennis Pro Carol De Ocampo and for the adults by Graham Stillwell, former Great Britain Davis Cup Player. Afterwards the rest of the evening lasted with four hours of tennis, Carol practically had to turn off the tennis lights and remind everyone that the night is over.

Thank you to the Fil Am Tennis Orgn of Northern Virginia for the free Tennis lessons, great food, and free indoor court time. It’s a wonderful gesture to the community getting people from around the area for fellowship and “Salu-salo”, while keeping healthy and having a good time.

Already the members and organizers are planning on incorporating some cultural programs and other neat ideas for next year’s appreciation of our Filipino American Heritage. Please visit our website at www.filamtennis.com and view the photos from the event.
